Surge in Reimbursement Claims for VR Therapy Signals Growing Demand, Effectiveness

By Vijay | Nov 14, 2025

Since 2023, nearly 50,000 claims have been filed using the CPT code for VR therapy; both payers and clinicians show rising confidence in VR therapy as a reimbursable, evidence-based intervention for autism and beyond.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Nov. 13, 2025 — Floreo, the pioneering developer of virtual reality (VR)-based therapy for neurodivergent youth and adults, today released data showing increased usage of the American Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code for VR-based therapy.

A CPT-III code (also known as a “T code”) is a standardized identifier used by healthcare providers to report emerging technologies and services to insurance companies. In 2023, following an application initiated by Floreo, the American Medical Association approved a temporary Category III CPT code for VR-based behavioral therapy. This approval marked a historic first in digital therapeutics and offers a structured pathway for reimbursement from the major payers, including Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Kaiser Permanente, and UnitedHealthcare.

According to public price transparency data, more than 85 healthcare plans across all 50 states have established rates for the reimbursement code, which is now in use by a wide range of providers, including autism therapy providers.

“The data tells us that practitioners are growing more comfortable with VR therapy, and that payers are enabling far broader adoption,” said Vijay Ravindran, CEO of Floreo. “We are encouraged to see such a wide range of behavioral health providers, therapists, and clinic networks leverage the CPT code to expand access to evidence-based, tech-enabled interventions that improve outcomes for individuals.”

“For Center for Social Dynamics, the CPT code furthers our ability to bring innovative, engaging, and proven tools like Floreo’s VR therapy to the individuals with autism that we serve,” said Kelly Bozarth, CEO of Center for Social Dynamics. “This funding shift aligns with how autism therapies are evolving, and we encourage other providers to take advantage of this reimbursement opportunity to improve client outcomes.”
